HIDDEN PLACES: When Eliza's father-in-law dies suddenly during the Depression, she is left with two young children, an unharvested orange crop on a heavily mortgaged farm, and no money. Bible-quoting Aunt Batty urges her to have faith. Gabe Harper, a wandering veteran with wonderful manners and an air of mystery, is willing to help with the harvest, but the mortgage payment is due in less than 30 days. As the family fights to complete the harvest in time to make the mortgage payment, Eliza and Aunt Batty discover that Gabe is a writer, and Gabe and Eliza fall in love.
"Hidden places has to be one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. It is so good to watch a movie that has no bad language or violence or bad morals in it, and still has a story line that keeps you interested all the way through from the beginning to the end. This is a story of hardluck to romance, and I loved every minute." --Allan C. Dennis Hartman |

FOREVER STRONG: A troubled young rugby player is given the choice between jail or playing for a rival team coached by a man known for building not only championship teams, but championship boys. Based on a true story, Forever Strong offers stand up and cheer sports drama combined with the consequences of a strong ethical code to achieve victory on and off the field.
"This is one of the best, if not the best, sports story ever. This is just one true story from the famed Highland Rugby Team (who just won their 19th straight national championship in 2009). There is a reason for their greatness. You'll understand when you see this phenomenal film. This was my favorite film of the year." --Craig N. Hartman |

LOVE FINDS A HOME: Is an excellent period film with a wholesome story throughout. Good FAMILY viewing, with action, suspense, drama, and some romance.
This movie will fit right in with the family. you'll find it hard not add it to your movie collection. It's a very emotional realistic movie about the pioneer days and what women went through to give birth. I believe you will love it! |

LITTLE WOMEN(Collector's Series:The flaws are easily forgiven in this beautiful version of Louisa May Alcott's novel. A stirring look at life in New England during the Civil War. As the Civil War rages on, the four sisters of the March family struggle to grow up without the guiding hand of their loving father.
This version of Little Women is a classic in its own right. Armstrong did an amazing job here capturing the period and coaxing beautiful performances from her cast. Ryder, Dunst, Alvarado, Mathis, Sarandon, Byrne, Bale and a heartbreaking Danes are all in top form. Visually, the movie is just beautiful and the soundtrack is mesmerizing. A must see. |

THE ROBE: When Roman tribune Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton) is sent to Jerusalem, one of his assignments is the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Marcellus, a cynical and hardened man, wins the robe Jesus wore to the crucifixion while gambling with other Roman soldiers underneath the dying savior. He later becomes convinced that his hallucinations and violent outbursts are the result of a curse received from the robe, which is now in the possession of his escaped slave, Demetrius (Victor Mature), somewhere in the Middle East. He sets out to find Demetrius in order to destroy the robe and the curse and finds faith instead, converting to Christianity. This was the first movie to be filmed in CinemaScope, and won Oscars in 1953 for costume design, art direction, and set decoration. The visual aspects of the film are stunning, and it may be worth viewing for that alone; however, the script and acting leave much to be desired, and you won't find inspiration in these areas if that's what interests you. If, however, you are more interested in this film for its religious matter, the story of the conversion of the hardened Marcellus is inspiring. --James McGrath |

BEN-HUR: After his boyhood friend Messala's fanatic loyalty to Rome makes him a powerful enemy, Judah Ben-Hur is found guilty of an attempted murder he did not commit. His family is banished and he is enslaved on a warship. Through his ferocity in a raging sea battle, he is able to escape and become a horse trainer. To exact his revenge, Ben-Hur decides to compete against Messala in the Roman chariot races. They race, locked in a battle to the death. Barely surviving, Ben-Hur forsakes the sword for Christ and finally finds redemption. Winner of a record 11 Academy Award, including Best Picture and Actor --Charlton Heston
I've read that director William Wyler wanted to humanize the unwieldy scale of earlier Biblical films. He succeeded. The chariot race may be the hallmark of the movie, but it is the small, human elements that carry the story. Judah Ben-Hur's love for the slave, Esther; his devotion to mother and sister and his transformation from the vengeful slayer of Messalla to follower of Jesus on the road to crucifixion is a character saga of mythic proportions. |

CLANCY: From the producers of 'The Perfect Stranger' comes a heartwarming adventure tale about friendship, sacrifice, and overcoming adversity in the face of danger. Clancy Miller (Christina Dawn Fougnie, in her movie debut) is an abused girl who runs away to elude social workers seeking to remove her from her home. Out on the streets, she meets Nick (Jefferson Moore, The Perfect Stranger), an ill-tempered, homeless war vet. A corrupt mayor (J. Robert Bailey, Melrose Place), desperate for re-election, offers Nick a reward to keep the girl out of site; his secret plan - to 'rescue' the girl in grand fashion in order to gain favor with the voters. However, a scuffle with a loan shark sends Nick and Clancy on the run to the nearby countryside. There, an unlikely relationship develops, as the angelic girl copes with the hard exterior of her newfound guardian. Meanwhile, the mayor's ambitions heighten, as the prospects materialize for a statewide 'manhunt' and a military-style rescue operation that will play out as the TV news cameras roll.
Jefferson Moore's best film to date. This is a story of personal redemption through faith; basically an Iraq War Veteran feels that he has done an unforgivable wrong, so he does not believe that anyone, including God, could ever forgive him. His "Angel" comes in the form of a young girl who is stranded into homelessness because of a drug-addicted mother. This is a well-done film on many levels. |

GIFTED HANDS: The Ben Carson Story: Young Ben Carson didn't have much of a chance. Growing up in a broken home amongst poverty and prejudice, his grades suffered and his temper flared. And yet, his mother never lost her faith in him. Insisting he follow the opportunities she never had, she helped to grow his imagination, intelligence and, most importantly, his belief in himself. That faith would be his gift - the thing that would drive him to follow his dream of becoming one of the world's leading neurosurgeons.

SONGS FROM THE HEART: I saw this on PBS today and just when I thought the girls couldn't get any better, they did! The concert was shot in an excellent location and the girls' voices are in top form. I don't even know where to begin because this concert is amazing and probably one of the best they have ever done. The songs really show off their voices, good choices were made.
Some of the highlights are Lisa's gorgeous renditions of Fields of Gold and The Moon's A Harsh Mistress, Mairead's energetic performances of The Coast of Galiçia and Slumber My Darling/The Mason's Apron, the fun, upbeat cover of Nil Sé'n Lá, Chloe's version of When You Believe, the group performance of O, America! (I can't get through this song without shedding a tear), and Lynn's beautiful My Lagan Love. One of Alex's songs that I like, You'll Be In My Heart, was on the show, but is not on the song list here. It's a shame that's not on the DVD. I think there are a few other omissions from what I've been reading. The Call is a good opening number and You Raise Me Up was a great closer. I have nothing but good things to say about this show, I would recommend it to all fans of Celtic Woman and this could possibly gain some new fans for the girls. I would also recommend the CD to go along with it, there's a standard and deluxe version of that. --A Celtic Woman Fan |

A NEW JOURNEY: Live at Slane Castle: Celtic Woman, the PBS sensation, returns for 2007 in A New Journey: Live at Slane Castle, Ireland. Most of the elements return as well: vocalists Chloe, Meav, Lisa, and Orla; fiery fiddler Mairead; music director David Downes; chorus and orchestra; and the New Age-y Celtic and traditional music. New for this show is New Zealand vocalist Hayley Westenra, a picturesque outdoor location, and an almost entirely new song list. Chloe sings "The Prayer" (made famous by Josh Groban) and "Panis Angelicus"; Lisa covers "Caledonia," "The Blessing," and "The Voice"; Orla sings "Newgrange" and accompanies herself on harp for "Carrickfergus"; Meav sings "Dulaman"; Mairead plays "Granuaile's Dance" and "Shenandoah: The Pacific Slope"; and Hayley sings "Scarborough Fair" by herself and duets with Mairead (Handel's "Lascia Ch'io Pianga") and Meav ("The Last Rose of Summer"). Then of course the group performs together ("The Sky and the Dawn and the Sun," "Over the Rainbow," "Beyond the Sea," "At the Ceili," "Sing Out!", "Spanish Lady," "Mo Ghile Mear"). Encore performances from the original show are Enya's "Orinoco Flow," "Danny Boy," "Somewhere," and "You Raise Me Up." Hayley proves to be an excellent fit among the beautiful voices, and Lisa seems to emerge as the talent most deserving of attention, but overall the show lacks some of the fresh sparkle of the original. The song list isn't quite as strong, and some of the "primp and pose" choreography is just silly. But Celtic Woman is never less than charming, and at its best can be quite stirring. --David Horiuchi |

A CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION: This is my first Christmas DVD that I have ever bought. I love Christmas classics and this is by far one of my favorite. While searching youtube for classics and remixes I stumbled upon many clips of this DVD. I had no problem spending my money on this wonderful masterpiece. The music is great, the video is clear and all the ladies voices are wonderful makes for some easy listening.
Some may say the video it's self is not a cozy representation of Christmas or winter and that may be so but who is to say that one just wants to listen to the music and enjoy the sweet sounds of the Classics.
If any DVD for Christmas I would highly recommend this one a must buy. --S. Roberts |

CELTIC WOMAN: Gorgeous to listen to and gorgeous to look at, Celtic Woman is perfect PBS fare, sort of a Riverdance without the dancing. Drawing on the same New Age-y sound and propulsive energy as that show's solo-voice and choral numbers, the live concert features four attractive young women in strapless evening gowns with soaring voices backed by an orchestra, an Anuna-like chorus, and a large percussion section. The more traditional fare includes Méav Ni Mhaolchatha's "Danny Boy" and "She Moved Through the Fair," and Chloë Agnew's "Ave Maria" (the Bach-Gounod version). Movie and TV selections range from Agnew's "Walking in the Air" (The Snowman) and "Someday" (Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame) to Lisa Kelly's "May It Be" (the Enya song from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the King) and Órla Fallon's voice and harp rendition of "Harry's Game." A fifth woman, Máiréad Nesbitt, adds some variety by fiddling "The Butterfly" and "Ashokan Farewell" (best known as the theme from Ken Burns's The Civil War). Occasionally the singers join together, as in Enya's "Orinoco Flow," an a cappella rendition of West Side Story's "Somewhere," music director David Downes's composition "One World," and a stately version of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." Celtic Woman was created by Downes (like many of the other performers, a Riverdance veteran) along with Sharon Browne and Dave Kavanagh of the Celtic Collections record label. --David Horiuchi |

THE GREATEST JOURNEY: Essential Collection: Yes, it is basically just clips from the other Celtic Woman DVDs, BUT the documentary ALONE is worth buying.
If you are a big Celtic Woman fan you will really want this. The hour long "The Story So Far" Documentary is fantastic, and a great behind-the-scenes look at how Celtic Woman all came about, and the girls' thoughts about it so far. Great interviews with all of the girls, and a great view of how they interact with each other. I really loved this documentary, and to me, it is what makes this DVD worth the cost. Plus, this is a great DVD if you are looking to share the magic of Celtic Woman with someone else who is not familiar with them. It really goes through all the great hits and well-loved songs. They've added in some beautiful shots of Ireland in between the songs and they do compliment the music so well!
As for new stuff, CW will be filming a new DVD this summer, so be on the look out for that.
Long live Celtic Woman, and bring on the Spring 2009 tour!!!!! --Emily Smith |

CELTIC WOMAN PRESENTS CHLOE: Walking in the Air (2007): This DVD is a real treat for any Chloe fan. Chloe's singing is soft and dreamy, and her expressions and gestures natural. Her overal performance is unaffected and sincere. Filmed at various locations in Ireland, Chloe seems more Irish than I ever saw her in the sunlight, her cheeks rosy and her face shiny. Somehow she seems more Irish in these settings than in her studio photographs. The camera men could have been more imaginative, and some of Chloe's outfits looked too casual, however. I have Frank Patterson's Songs of Inspiration video, which was also filmed in Ireland, and I can't help comparing the filming of it with that of Walking in the Air. There's a lot to love anyway, though. I pop this in to watch a few songs almost every day, as it really inspires me. Great job Chloe! --Rebekah A. Lane |

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN: Is an epic in the spirit of THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, this widely acclaimed motion picture is a meticulous recreation of the turbulent era of Jesus and the events that changed the course of history! Narrated by Golden Globe nominee Christopher Plummer (Best Supporting Actor, AMERICAN TRAGEDY, 2000), it’s the bold and powerful story of Jesus as told by his disciple John. The best-loved but least understood of the gospels, John presents a uniquely human portrait of courage and passion encompassing Jesus' entire three-year ministry, the final years of his life. Intimate and reflective, THE GOSPEL OF JOHN offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the incomparable life and times of Jesus Christ.
This movie will fit right in with the family. you'll find it hard not add it to your movie collection. It's a very emotional realistic movie about the pioneer days and what women went through to give birth. I believe you will love it! |

JOSEPH (The Bible Collection): You will enjoy this movie, espescially its ending. The casting was great (Okay fine, Josephs former master was a white woman, so what? She played her part well I thought). Sexually explicit scenes? Give me a break. There were no sexually explicit scenes. There was a scene of Joseph in the bath being tempted by Potiphar's wife. This is no different from a man/woman dealing with sexual thoughts/temptations daily, and that powerful scene would give any Christian in the spirit a visual illustration of the pressure Joseph felt. I especially liked his line when he said to her "please, you push the limits of my body to more than it can bear." The other added scenes did not take anything away from the movie, but gave it dimension. I will take 1 star away only because I do not think that scene where the brother slept with the "prostitute" who turned out to be his other brothers wife or whatever was necessary. Besides one or two minor things, overall I thought it was a great film, and the reunion at the end was well acted. |

|
ABRAHAM (The Bible Collection): The movie is an extraordinary portrayal of the life of Abraham. It's entertaining, accurate, educational and stirring. In a world filled with gods you can build, see, hold, and collect; Abraham's trust in and obedience to the invisible God is inspiring. The up and downs of the life of faith are wonderfully depicted. The emotional aspect of Old Testament animal sacrifice is explained in a way that theological textbooks could never rival.
Richard Harris is brilliant as the patriarch Abraham. Barbara Hershey makes a very believable and winsome Sarah. The costuming and scenery are outstanding. I found only minimal disagreement between this portrayal compared to the Biblical account, the culture of the time, and the ancillary facts of history. I would highly recommend the movie "Abraham." Abraham is one of the very best movies from Turner Home Entertainment's excellent Bible Collection. --Todd Nudnall |

|
JACOB (The Bible Collection): Great casting, acting, directing, scenery, etc. This film is an earnest telling of chapters 25 through 33 of Genesis, and starts when Esau sells his birthright to his twin brother Jacob for a bowl of pottage (red lentil stew), and then gets maneuvered out of his father's blessing by his mother Rebekah. She knows Esau doesn't listen to God's voice, and his two Canaanite wives are a wearisome thing in her life, so Jacob is sent off to her brother (who has daughters), some 400 miles away, where Jacob falls in love with the attractive Rachel...and once there, "everything he touches, flourishes." It is a narrative of great faith and perserverance, and the relationship between Jacob and Rachel is touching and sweet.
Most of the story follows biblical lines, with a few additions; one of them is inexplicable to me, because it is the only part of the film that could be upsetting to children; it shows Jacob on his journey, fleeing a man he thinks is Esau seeking retribution (it is actually Esau's brother-in-law), when his donkey has a fatal fall from a hillside. It is odd that they would embelish the story with such an unpleasant event, because otherwise the sheep, goats and camels are wonderful, and would be enjoyable viewing for children.
The story ends as Jacob, his wives and children (the sons who would become the twelve tribes of Israel), servants and flocks arrive at Shehem. This film is highly recommended. |

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS: The Ten Commandments showcases Moses, the reluctant prophet, who was the only man in Biblical history to see the face of God and call him "friend." This special animated version is filled with high adventure, miraculous events and a gentle sense of humor. Condemned to die by the Pharaoh while just a baby, Hebrew Moses is set adrift on the River Nile by his mother and his sister. Rescued by the daughter of the Pharaoh, he grows up thinking he’s an Egyptian prince. Eventually exiled from Egypt when he is exposed as a Jew, he is touched by God and told that he will lead his enslaved people to the Promised Land.
This is an excellent re-telling of the Bible's Exodus. Vivid animation, color and captivating storyline that kids will just love it. The voice cast is strong and the music is excellent.
The story follows the Bible closely with scary scene tastefully done up. A good resource to introduce bible stories to kids, sunday school, etc. A MUST for any Church Sunday School Library. |

|
MOSES (The Bible Collection): Though this television production doesn't have the epic grandeur of "The Ten Commandments", it is a marvelous telling of the story of Moses, with some superb acting; there are a few liberties taken to flesh out the script, but the heart of the Biblical account is intact, with a memorable portrayal by Ben Kingsley as the prophet who was "clumsy with words" but led his people to freedom.
Other terrific performances come from David Suchet as Aaron, Sonia Braga as Zipporah, and Philip Stone as Jethro, and as the "bad guys", Frank Langella, who with his sonorous voice makes an effective Pharaoh, and Maurice Roeves as Zerack, the man who is a continual kvetch.
Filmed in sub-saharan Quarzazate and Agadir, Morocco, it is visually beautiful, with the excellent cinematography by Raffaele Mertes; I like the neutral palette, and the artifacts and costuming that give it an authentic look of ancient times. Added to the atmosphere is the wonderful score by Marco Frisina.
The effects are good, from the parting of the sea to the tablets of the law, and other than a short sequence of violence (which includes a swift depiction of sacrificing an animal) after the golden calf incident, it is family friendly. Total running time is 184 minutes. This is a film that stands up to a lot of repeated viewing; it is so full of eternal truths, and content that is applicable to our lives today. |

THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST: After all the controversy and rigorous debate has subsided, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ will remain a force to be reckoned. artistic goal of creating the Passion of Christ "Passion" in this context meaning "suffering")is a quite literal, in-your-face interpretation of the final 12 hours in the life of Jesus, scripted almost directly from the gospels (and spoken in Aramaic and Latin with a relative minimum of subtitles) and presented as a relentless, 126-minute ordeal of torture and crucifixion. For Christians and non-Christians alike, this film does not "entertain," and it's not a film that one can "like" or "dislike" in any conventional sense. (It is also emphatically not a film for children or the weak of heart. |

JESUS OF NAZARETH:Originally made for TV in 1977, this in-depth (six hours plus) version of Jesus' life is so thorough that the first hour is devoted solely to the story of his birth. The film doesn't skimp on some of the other landmark events of this famous story either. Director Franco Zeffirelli gives more than 12 minutes screen time each to the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. Passages of the Bible are quoted verbatim, the locations have a Palestine-like authenticity, and, aside from some of the principals (Robert Powell as Jesus, Olivia Hussey as Mary, and Stacy Keach as Barabbas), many of the non-Roman characters are actually played by Semitic-looking actors. Zeffirelli diligently provides the sociopolitical background that gave rise to Jesus' following and the crisis in belief it caused for the people of Israel (and one or two Romans). While not graphic by today's standards, some of the scenes--baby boys being ripped from their mothers' arms and slaughtered, nails being driven into Jesus' hands--may disturb young and/or sensitive children. --Kimberly Heinrichs
After more than two decades, JESUS OF NAZARETH remains the greatest motion picture on the life of Jesus Christ -unsurpassed and second-to-none. Beautifully directed by Franco Zeffirelli (best known for his 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet) and featuring a constellation of the greatest international actors: Sir Lawrence Olivier, Rod Steiger, Anne Bancroft, Ernest Borgnine, James Earl Jones, Anthony Quinn (among others, oh my!), this six-hour magnum opus has given flesh and humanity to the people and events of the Gospel narratives like no other movie before or since. --Daniel Rivera! |

THE HIDING PLACE: presented by Billy Grahm: In this inspiring true story of Holocaust survivor Corrie ten Boom, a family joins the underground resistance. But when they themselves are arrested and imprisoned in concentration camps, they realize the importance of their own faith.
This is the true story of the heroic Ten Boom family who, during the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands. asked themselves the question, "If not us...who; if not now...when?" They answered it, and ultimately their response cost most of them their lives. This is their story, as told from the perspective of the sole survivor, Corrie Ten Boom. |

THE HEART OF TEXAS: When tragedy pierces the heart of a small community on the quiet Texas plains, its townspeople witness what can happen when grace and forgiveness triumph over angiush and outrage. Against the clamorous traffic of our crowded lives, a story of such tender mercy can seem more of a work of fiction or a wishful tale...yet every moment of this unbelievable story is true. |
|
IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE: I watched this movie on the day of its release. It was well put together, had an excellant cast, and a message to convey. The storyline is about a policeman who does not know the Lord and his marriage is on the rocks. This can apply to so many people, so the movie can be used as an evangelistic tool. The main character comes to know the Lord through a series of dreams in preparation for the rapture. --Charles H. Thompson III |
|
PILGRIM'S PROGRESS: Journey to Heaven: I was pleasantly surprised by the production quality. Too many explicitly Christian films lack world class production values - this film does not. The casting is excellent, the characters believable and the storytelling is wonderful. The film is very true to the book. I enjoyed it far more than I expected to and highly recommend it.
The cinematography is beautiful, the acting superb and the music is inspiring. Technical effects and costumes are very well done. Many scenes are powerfully moving. I highly recommend this encouraging movie. |
